CD recommendations & track listings

For maximum acceptability of subject matter, I've kept this list to abstract instrumental music, and for the 5 releases I list that are mostly abstract apart from one or two tracks, I've warned about those tracks in case anyone wants to omit them. But for the sake of brevity I won't explicitly note that an instrumental piece is meant to be "about the countryside" etc if that's obvious from its title.

Minor warning: Track 9 might remind some listeners of "The Maids of Mourne Shore" or "Down by the Sally Gardens" (a romantic story); omit this track if that's an undesirable trigger. This CD happened to be recorded in a church, but it is not church music.

Beethoven symphonies 1-8.
Ideally you should use a historically informed ("period") performance such as Gardiner's (which also has a talk on why they didn't modernise it). Anyone who wants strictly instrumental music may wish to stop with number 8 (or the 3rd movement of number 9), since the 4th movement of number 9 ends with a choral ode whose lyrics might offend some (it's a modified German poem that blends imagery from Greek and Christian religions and alludes to drunkenness) although it does include some good lines. The Hanover Band boxed set also includes the Missa Solemnis (which you might want to omit if you wish to stay clear of the church tradition of the Mass) and Overtures (which are instrumental but were written for use with stories you may or may not like), but it's easy to leave these out if you want to hear only symphonies. The Hanover Band recordings happened to be made in churches, but the symphonies are not church music.
Below are the track listings from the first four discs of the Nimbus Records Hanover Band set (1998).

A Portrait of Elgar
William Boughton: English Symphony & String Orchestras
Nimbus Records 1996 (4-disc set). The individual discs were also released separately in 1989, 1995, 1983 (with a cover showing the top of a Malvern hill we've climbed) & 1988, and the Gracenote database said Disc 2 was also released in 1997 as "Orchestral Favourites Vol. 6".
This set was given to us by my late father in December 2015

Trigger warnings: Disc 4 contains the Pomp & Circumstance Marches, without words but you might want to omit March 1 if bothered by thoughts of the patriotic song it was later turned into. The last 3 tracks of Disc 3 contain tunes Elgar planned to use in an opera whose story was to contain "ostentatious living and corruption in high places" (Young), but he died before he could do that and the music stands alone.
Elgar/Payne Symphony No.3
BBC Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Davis
NMC Recordings, 1998
(Much better than my 1996/97 school project, which used a finale theme from the 1934 sketches as a stimulus and the Elgar family kindly gave permission for the blind students at Worcester to play it; I think they knew a proper version was on its way so my small 'tinker' didn't matter at that stage. It did however mean I sat through Payne's premiere wishing I'd thought of those flute motifs....)

  2. Scherzo: Allegretto (9:40)
  3. Adagio Solenne (15:14)

Hoffmeister, C.P.E. Bach: Flute Concertos
English Chamber Orchestra, Ingrid Dingfelder (1977/79)

Sviatoslav Richter 10 Original Albums
2015 remastering of recordings from 1950s etc
Four CDs from this set were given to us by my late father in September 2015.

Minor trigger warning: the artwork says "The Birthday Edition" in large letters even though the contents are nothing to do with birthday celebrations and Richter had already died. ("Centenary" might have been a safer term.)

ricordo
This is both the CD title and the group's name. Undated and self-published, it can be harder to find than their earlier Linn Records CD (the URL printed on it went down in 2006 and the Internet Archive version doesn't mention this disc). It was the last CD my father gave us before he died in August 2016 and I have no idea where he got it from.

Vivaldi: Conterti per Flauto, Archi e Cembalo, op. 10
Frans Brüggen, Members of the Orchestra of the 18th Century
RCA 1986 (recorded 1979)
The second movement of Concerto No.3 in D (nicknamed the Goldfinch flute concerto) is easily playable if you want to find the score on MuseData (I converted it to Lilypond of course); it sounds better when taken down a semitone to Db so as to be closer to Baroque pitch (and anyway flat-keys on the modern flute tend to sound nicer: Debussy knew what he was doing when he wrote in 5 flats).
This CD was given to me by my late father in September 2006
  1. Concerto No.1 in F (6:54)
  2. Concerto No.2 in G minor (8:57)
  3. Concerto No.3 in D (11:27)
  4. Concerto No.4 in G (7:27)
  5. Concerto No.5 in F (8:28)
  6. Concerto No.6 in G (9:04)

My notes about Chinese music and CUCOS are now on a separate page.

The above CDs have various copyright holders; I merely assembled the listing and inserted some comments.
